More than  100 IT professionals, students and bloggers joined the Software Freedom Day last Saturday at Wellington City Council as part of worldwide celebration  of free and  open source software .

I was one of the participants in a Barcamp supported by Silverstripe CMS and during the discussion I’ve learned a lots  being a blogger. The event started around 12noon and ended around 6pm with Pizza and Beer.

I was lucky enough to talked to Nat Torkington, the organizer for the Bar Camp. According to him, ther goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere!.

The event featured an ‘open source barcamp’ allowing participants to discuss their thoughts, ideas and experiences with open source software and a ‘hackfest’/’installfest’ in a dedicated room (with sofas and coffee)  and the  SuperHappyDevHouse hack-a-thon, give demonstrations to a captive audience, and have open source software (such as Linux) installed on their computer with help from the  WellyLUG team .
